Q. So many lives have been cut short and lost world-wide, sadly also impacting us close to home. What additional health tips do you have for us to continue living well in our own community?
Hydration
Although corona virus mainly causes a respiratory illness, some patients seem to be presenting with other symptoms like stomach pain and diarrhea. If you have diarrhea and become dehydrated, drinking an electrolyte solution from a trusted pharmacy may help save your life. (Naturally, you should seek immediate medical attention if you have any COVID-19 symptoms)
Avoid excess alcohol
In these days of the corona virus pandemic, it is important to remember that drinking excess alcohol can suppress a wide variety of immune functions & lower the body’s resistance to various infections. This is also relevant for recovering patients. (However, alcohol is an excellent household disinfectant – especially at a concentration of 70% or higher, there are reports that it kills corona virus in 30 seconds)
Q. How can we stay calm and help others stay calm?
Calming practices
- Yoga & meditation can help to calm the mind in times of trouble. Meditation can mean just sitting quietly or listening to classical music – scientific research has found both activities to be beneficial for the body and human health.
- Pet-time can also be soothing. Pet owners tend to have a lower risk of heart disease and scientific studies have shown that just petting a dog can lower a person’s blood pressure.
- Some studies suggest that chamomile tea may be effective in helping people to relax and fall asleep, possible by acting like a class of tranquilizers called benzodiazepines.
Q. Dr. Moondust, what is your overall opinion on what we are facing and what do you feel are the prospects?
The good news is that COVID-19 seems to be a relatively stable virus & has not mutated significantly so far. Therefore, containment should be possible by studying China’s example. However, disturbing new reports from South Korea suggest re-infection or re-activation of the virus is possible. My Chinese doctor says acupuncture has helped prevent this in China.
Q. What do you think of the idea of Immunity CARDS?
Greece has been a good model in Europe for controlling the spread of COVID-19. All Greek schools were closed on the day of the first corona virus fatality in the country. Nonessential shops were closed within four days of the first fatality & daily church services were suspended soon after. Apparently, these early measures helped to contain the outbreak, but it’s not clear if they will continue to be effective.
Germany plans to issue “immunity cards” for those who have developed immunity to COVID-19 as a result of universal antibody testing. These cards will entitle holders to work, travel, and socialize thereby allowing a gradual reopening of the economy. This is an excellent science-based approach to dealing with the problem of overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic. The ultimate goal is that as people as possible should have immunity to the virus so that it is no longer a looming threat.
