Skincare Routines Moondust’s Male Customers Report as Essential
Tips for the 4 steps men use to have a bright and healthy face forward to their world:
- Cleansing
- Cleanse your face twice a day – morning and evening are preferable.
- Use a gentle facial cleanser formulated for your skin type, to remove dirt, excess oil, and impurities.
- Avoid harsh soaps or cleansers that can strip your skin of natural oils. A cleanser with ingredients like rosewater (if you have sensitive skin) or hyaluronic acid can help maintain hydration.
- Exfoliation: Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote a smoother complexion.
The exfoliating product should suit your skin type and preferences. Herbal scrubs with small, gentle particles (if you have sensitive skin) or chemical exfoliants containing ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) can help remove dead skin cells. Most men exfoliate 1-2 times a week.
Dr. Moondust adds, “Gentlemen, in your observation of your skincare routines – adding the step of a good scrub with a facecloth and natural facial cleanser in the evening helps to remove environmental pollutants. These can lead to lack-lustre skin and your exfoliation will reveal brighter skin as you greet the day ahead!
- Moisturizing: Moisturize daily to keep skin hydrated, nourished, and protected. Match your moisturizer to your skin type. Is it dry, oily, or combination skin?
- Look for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin (if you have sensitive skin) for hydration, and antioxidants like vitamin E or green tea extract add benefits. Some products also offer ceramides, or niacinamide, which help lock in moisture, strengthen the skin barrier. They provide additional benefits like brightening or anti-aging properties.
- Moisturizing is essential for maintaining healthy skin. By keeping it hydrated you prevent dryness, and maintain its natural balance. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, seek products that are oil-free or non-comedogenic.
- Shaving: If you shave, follow a proper shaving routine to minimize irritation of the skin and to avoid ingrown hairs. Your equipment and shaving products count!
- Use a sharp razor. Shave in the direction of hair growth, and apply a shaving cream or gel to lubricate the skin.
- Use a quality shaving cream or gel that provides lubrication and moisturization to minimize irritation and razor burn. Look for products with soothing ingredients like Aloe Vera or chamomile.
After shaving, rinse with cold water and apply an alcohol-free aftershave or soothing moisturizer to calm the skin. Ouchi if you forget the alcohol free!
Special considerations for men and your daily skincare routine
Some men may have specific skincare concerns or conditions that require additional attention.
Men with sensitive skin should choose fragrance-free and hypoallergenic products. If you have acne-prone skin, choose a non-comedogenic or oil-free product. Consult a dermatologist for targeted treatments.
Men with facial hair should take time to pay attention to beard and mustache care. Consider using beard oils or balms to moisturize and condition the hair and skin beneath. It adds a glow to your impression on others when the hair is healthy and conditioned, and to your self-image when you glimpse it in the mirror!
Eye care for the delicate skin around the eyes may require the use of an eye cream or gel. Some are formulated to target concerns like dark circles, puffiness, or fine lines. Ingredients you might find in these products might include caffeine, vitamin C, or retinol. Typically, they are beneficial for brightening and tightening the skin.
Using your ring finger to gently apply the product you choose helps to avoid excessive tugging. Ingredients like caffeine, vitamin C, or retinol can be beneficial for brightening and tightening the delicate skin around the eyes.
Skin concerns such as acne, aging, or hyperpigmentation may require targeted treatments. You can add them to your routine daily skincare and they will help improve skin texture, and reducing hyperpigmentation. These may include serums, spot treatments, or specific products recommended by your dermatologist.
Dr. Moondust’s special recommendations for suncare for men
Men must care for their facial skin and consider also using sun protection all over in both sunny and cloudy weather. Men who find themselves outdoor for leisure hours or work, or near windows or in vehicles that expose them to the sun, should be conscientious about their suncare habits.
Dr. Moondust stresses these basic rules of suncare for men to keep their skin glowing with health, and to avoid skin cancer:
Use a sunscreen regardless of weather conditions. It is important to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation. Smooth it on your face and exposed skin, including the ears and neck, as mentioned, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours. Apply more frequently if you are sweating or swimming.
For the sun sensitive at work or leisure outside, Moondust Cosmetics® recommends Skin Protector Plus (SPP) The suncare product is all-natural, easy to apply, and compact to tote along.
It has a formulation that includes 13% zinc oxide and is suitable for sensitive skin. It is especially gentle and pleasant but reassuringly effective for anyone recovering from skin cancer, or concerned due to family members dealing with skin cancer.
Depending on your skin’s needs, you may also consider incorporating additional products like toners, face masks, or facial oils. See above for ideas for your daily skin care routine where your attention results in extra hydration and soothing effects on your facial and neck skin.
Studies support the use of suncare protection by men who work outdoors, engage in recreational activities, or participate in sports. These are the reasons for effective application of suncare:
- Increased sun exposure: Men who work outdoors or engage in outdoor activities for extended periods are at higher risk of sun damage due to prolonged sun exposure. This can lead to various skin issues, including sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. (Read about scientific sunburn here: Human Sunburn Cycle)
- Skin cancer risk: Skin cancer, including both melanoma and non-melanoma types, is a significant concern for individuals with regular sun exposure. Multiple studies have shown that sunscreen use can reduce the risk of developing skin cancer.
- Protection from UVA and UVB ray harm: The use of suncare products that protect against both UVA and UVB rays has been proven effective in preventing sunburn and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Adequate protections mean application to exposed areas, such as the face, neck, arms, and legs.
- Sweat and water impacts: Individuals involved in sports or activities that cause heavy sweating or water exposure, should reapply suncare products. Moondust’s SPP is designed for easy to smooth on coverage so that all exposed areas will be protected. Check and reapply as needed for maximum protection from harmful rays.
- Essential part of sun protection strategies: Relying on cream sun protection is just one element in your overall strategy. Men who are outdoors a fair amount should also consider: a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunglasses for added protection against harmful UV radiation.
Do remember that prolonged sun exposure or vigorous physical activities requires that SPP be reapplied regularly, especially if sweating heavily or after swimming!
