Here’s how to be sure to avoid sun damage: 

1. Every season has potential for sun damage 

Yes, any time of year is guilty of sun damage even if there is cloud cover, or temperatures feel like they are dropping. A severe sunburn can happen in any month of the year, especially for the sun sensitive, or the unprotected. 

2. Avoid sun exposure between 10am and 4pm-even in autumn 

Do note the time of day you are out and about. Damaging rays are still at their strongest around solar noon time. So, minimize your exposure between the hours of 10 and 4.

3. Special conditions that can increase the risk of a burn  

Temperatures outdoors may be dropping. We get deeper into fall. You can still get a burn while active with water activity that reflects rays from the water, sand or even as the snow falls, from ice.  

Altitude can add to risk, also. The higher up you are the closer you are to the sun. Stay safe on hikes, slopes or surfing times outdoors. Mother Earth’s surface still reflects those potentially damaging rays whether you are hiking or skiing or surfing. 

4. Don’t lighten up your level of protection  

If you do use an SPF product, don’t lower your protection level.

Today’s post presents an excerpt from a recently published scientific paper by the Founder-President of Moondust Cosmetics® and its Primary Biochemist. Dr. Moondust invented the innovative Skin Protector Plus suncare cream. SPP is natural, environmentally friendly and with a unique 13% zinc oxide formulation designed for everyday use by skin cancer survivors, the sun-sensitive, and those with skin cancer in the family, who must have reliable sun exposure protection. 

In addition to cancer research, Dr. Moondust continues to study other aspects of biochemistry in an ongoing effort to add to the healthcare arsenal. This study involves vitamin and mineral supplementation and is an update to a preliminary study shared earlier on the Moondust website. Her investigations aim to protect our communities in the face of the continuously evolving COVID-19 situation. Dr. Moondust sought especially to offer more support to health care professionals who are at a higher than average risk of infection even when vaccinated. 

The abstract posted below is excerpted from the study entitled:    COVID-19 Prevention through Vitamin C, D, and Zinc Supplementation: A Small Clinical Study in Two Parts

Abstract: At the time of this study India had the third highest COVID-19 infection rate in the world after the US and Brazil, but that statistic was in flux due to rapidly changing variables and, therefore, it seemed an appropriate setting for a supplementation study. Following a successful first trial of vitamin C, D and zinc supplementation in 2020 with the staff at a small medical clinic in India, a second opportunity arose to continue the trial from January-March 22nd due to an urban coronavirus outbreak during the beginning of March 2021. It resulted in nearly a doubling of COVID-19 cases within the country in two weeks (March 8th – March 22nd) possibly due to the new, highly infectious, Indian Delta variant with multiple mutations and/or other international variants like the UK Alpha variant that were also present in the population by this time. As a result, a nighttime curfew and other restrictions were imposed for the whole month. An outbreak also occurred locally in a nearby city where the incidence of coronavirus cases increased and this happened prior to vaccination of the medical staff as part of the country’s universal inoculation campaign for healthcare workers, which began in January 2021 (one clinic clerk who travelled to the district civil hospital to receive the vaccine during the course of this second study was disqualified; all other clinic staff were inoculated after March 22nd). Although the clinic had closed during the first lockdown between March and mid-June 2020, it remained open to the public for this second wave in March 2021. During this period, the medical & non-medical staff continued following the same supplementation regimen as they had in July-December 2020 for Part I of this trial with positive results. Once again, in Part II of the trial, there were no COVID-19 cases recorded among any of the staff members at the clinic, which is situated in a rural community. It was concluded that targeted vitamin/mineral supplementation may be a useful addition to the anti-COVID-19 arsenal for health professionals at higher than average risk of infection. 

Dr. Moondust pursued this study due to the following quest excerpted from the introductory section: 

“A baffling number of disparate symptoms have been ascribed to COVID-19 infection including respiratory, gastrointestinal, circulatory, urinary tract and nerve dysfunction that has resulted in multi-organ failure in some cases. An array of risk factors has also been identified ranging from age, sex, obesity, diabetes, and hypertension to cigarette smoking that can increase mortality rate dramatically [1]. So far, a surprising number of deaths have been recorded worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic and the figure has surpassed the 6 million mark [2].” 

Her objective was: To determine whether select vitamin and mineral supplements could decrease the risk of COVID-19 infection in the absence of an available vaccine (pre-vaccine) and if it could prevent the occurrence of breakthrough COVID-19 infections (post-vaccine) in a follow-up study.

Proper protection during sun exposure helps avoid scientific sunburn in the short-term, but also one of the most prevalent cancers. Skin cancer risks are accelerated by repeated scientific sunburn as a result of UV exposure.

Summer Sun Safety Month is in fact observed as a reminder to keep yourself safe and healthy in the sun during the summer. Yet, still benefit from the sunlight that is so essential for your body to produce vitamin D, which is important in preventing infections such as COVID-19. 

Do be sun safe at work and play. 

Tips to protect yourself and your family from UV radiation damage: 

1. Timing is everything 

• Avoid mid-day sun exposure (10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the tropics) as UV rays are strongest then 
• Damaging rays bounce off surfaces like pavement, sand and water, even snow. 

2. Slather on sun protector 

• Our recommendation is the natural, easy to apply and pleasant SPP.

3. Throwing shade is OK in the case of suncare and protection 

• Cover up! Fashionably and Safely 
• Protective clothing helps beyond the sunscreens you might apply in providing complete protection from UV rays.  
• Cover up arms and legs and don’t forget to shade lips, the tips of your ears, and the backs of your hands and neck: think sleeves, broad-brimmed hats that provide more protection than a baseball cap or visor and maybe a great big umbrella to offer more shade.   

4. Keep your eyes on suncare 

• UV radiation also can burn your eyes and make them feel sore or gritty. And why risk damage to your retina, lens and cornea that might lead to clouding of the lens, or cataracts.  
• And even though skin cancer is the most prevalent cancer, exposure to excessive UV light can increase your risk of developing ocular melanoma.  
• Summer is a time for sunglasses, so find ones that block at least 99% of U.V.A. and U.V.B. rays.  

5. Sip on water as you soak up the sun 

• Hydrate the best way – with pure water. Skip the sugary drinks’ calories and preservatives.   
• Take in water regularly throughout the day and more when you are busy and active in the summer heat and sun.  

A medical minder: Skin cancer develops primarily on areas of sun-exposed skin, including the scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms, hands and legs. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

Where is Dr. Moondust on this summer’s day? Driving to destinations and duties in the new electro-mobility in a car with a hydrogen engine. We’ll call the fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) the H car! And let’s note that she applies Sun Protector Plus (SPP) to have full protection for her skin type, even as she navigates traffic behind the window. Even in the excitement of her new ‘ride’, Dr. Moondust follows the advice she shares. 

Why Dr. Moondust chose an H car? 

The short answer from Dr. Moondust is:  “It’s a beautiful sleek car with zero carbon emissions.” So, functionality and environmental protection, yet, there is more to the vehicle than meets the eye.  It does blend nicely with other vehicles on the road, and is being produced in greater numbers for personal and industrial use.  

About H cars and their essential components   

Car and technology buffs both can admire how H Cars are powered.  

Compressed hydrogen gas powers these fuel cell cars. The hydrogen gas feeds into an onboard fuel cell or “stack”. It doesn’t burn the gas. It transforms the fuel’s chemical energy into electrical energy. The electricity that is produced powers the car’s electric motors.  

Pure water is the only waste product sent out through the tailpipe, so emissions that we have come to expect from our vehicles are zero.  

The fuel cell is essentially similar to a battery in construction. Hydrogen enters the anode. There it comes in contact with a catalyst that enables the hydrogen atoms to separate into an electron and proton. A collector known as a conductive current collector gathers the electrons. This process is connected to the vehicle’s high-voltage circuitry designed to feed the onboard battery and/or the motors that turn the wheels. 

For those curious about the behind the scenes, or rather under the hood components – here they are:  

• Fuel Cell Stack– groups of fuel cells that combine oxygen and hydrogen to generate electricity and power the electric motor 
• Fuel Tank– a carbon-fiber reinforced tank that stores hydrogen 
• Electric Motor– that powers the car with the energy produced in the fuel cell stack 
• Battery– provides additional power to the electric motor and gets it from the regenerative design of the brakes 
• Exhaust– the only byproduct of the reaction occurring in the fuel cell stack is water vapor and it is sent out via the exhaust 

Of note is the thermal, or cooling system that maintains a proper operating temperature range for all the components named above. And of course the electric transmission that transfers mechanical power from the motor to drive the wheels, as we understand it in conventional vehicles. What is Dr. Moondust’s experience? 

It drives just like a regular keyless car and has all the computerized amenities on this screen. The seats are the classic straight Toyota seats, which are very comfortable and good for the back. And, after each run, one presses this button to release the water that has been generated during the drive. It’s really quite simple. 

What about ‘gassing’ up’ a Hydrogen car?   

While the cars are available industrially, it will be a while before there are enough hydrogen stations to service the cars they are selling in your town. 

“Even regular gas stations like Shell, are starting to install liquid hydrogen pumps, now, so, hopefully, it won’t be too long before they are replacing gas pumps everywhere! It is the single most effective way that each person can make a difference and combat climate-change,” says Dr. Moondust.
