Who is most at risk with COVID-19? How can we know if it might impact us?
According to an Icelandic scientist, COVID-19 is highly contagious & highly lethal to a small subset of the population, while it produces milder symptoms in most people. Studies out of New York State seem to indicate that obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes are strong risk factors for this virus.
Does a person’s age matter?
Although the COVID-19 virus infects people of all ages. The WHO (World Health Organization) has determined that the evidence to date supports that older adults & adults with underlying medical conditions are at a higher risk of getting severe COVID-19 disease.
Does gender matter?
A surprising gender disparity is emerging in the COVID-19 story. Statistics from China, South Korea, Italy and the US reveal that mortality rates are significantly higher in infected males than in infected females (68% vs. 32% in New York). Indian researchers propose that it may be due to the ability of the virus to bind to special receptors in the testicles. So, men should be extra-cautious.
Recently, a dear friend lost somebody in Italy to the corona virus. Although he was under sixty, he was an asthmatic recovering from bronchitis & had to go on a ventilator. Some sobering stats suggest that over 50% of COVID-19 patients put on ventilators do not survive. So, prevention is the best policy.
Everybody needs to assess their own potential vulnerability to the virus. So, for example, do you think a ninety year old man with diabetes & hypertension is at high, very high, or extremely high risk of getting a severe COVID-19 infection if exposed to an infected individual? (It really depends on a person’s various risk factors)
