Q. Dr. Moondust, why do we need to wear a mask?
A: We want to protect more vulnerable populations like seniors and children. It’s now been seen that there is a Covid-19 related inflammatory syndrome in children that can be quite serious and even affect heart function.
Italian researchers have found that the virus can stick to pollution particles in urban areas and can hitch a ride on them, so we really do need protection from them.
Q. What does this mean for us in urban centres?
Well, you don’t want to be doing any prolonged vigorous outdoor exercise in urban areas at this time. Probably a couple hours or half a day of hiking in the country side is still very healthy.
It’s a good idea, generally, to hike with a partner on the trails, in case you get into trouble and they have to go for help.
Q: What kind of mask should we get?
A: You want amedical mask with at least three layers of protection. On a surgical mask you have a dark outer layer and a light inner layer. And in between the two you have a layer that acts as a filter. This is the ideal.
